The Kurmi Despite working mostly in agriculture (an occupation usually associated with villagers and the poor), the Kurmi are thought to descend from a high caste of warriors, and they live fairly comfortable lives. Their ancestors, the Kshatriyas, defended the teachings of the ancient Hindu religion but lost this position due to opposition from another caste. According to the Joshua Project, the Kurmi people long for other groups to recognize their noble ancestry and ties to the warrior Kshatriya caste.

The Lodha As a tribal people dwelling in the rainforests of eastern India, the Lodha live mostly isolated lives. They typically live far from other castes. Their separation from society started when the British government began oppressing tribal groups. After rebelling, the Lodha were severely punished and resorted to a life of crime, thus receiving the label “criminal tribe.” Even today, other groups consider going to their villages unsafe. The Lodha survive on the forest and earn income through selling forest products at markets. Their religion is comprised of Hinduism and ancestor worship. Art also plays an important role in their lives, evidenced by ornate body tattooing.
