The Mahanta The Mahanta people live among cities and rural villages in several states of east India. As members of India’s second highest caste, the Mahanta have greater access to education and employment opportunities. However, those who live in villages usually receive less education and work in common labor positions. Most Mahantas are Hindu and follow traditional practices such as special devotion to their deities, celebration of festivals, and trying to live dutifully in order to escape what they believe to be a cycle of reincarnation.

The Mankidia Life for the Mankidia, also known as the Birhor, revolves around the forest. As adept trappers and gatherers, they typically eat wild produce and the meat of various forest animals. Most Mankidias choose to live nomadically, despite the government’s recent efforts to settle them in established areas. However, the Mankidias’ population is decreasing due to poor health and rampant alcoholism among their communities. Their religion consists of both Hindu and animistic practices. Unique to their people, they believe the sun god, Sing Bonga, and his wife created the universe and rule over it.

The Mazhabi The Mazhabi people of India primarily live in Punjab state. They have been historically isolated by their surrounding social and religious structures, and as such, have had little opportunity for education, employment, or health care. Poverty and socioeconomic hardship continue to be a barrier to their wellbeing. The Mazhabi typically follow Sikhism; a monotheistic religion founded by Guru Nanak in the 15th Century that highlights remembrance of God at all times, virtuous living, and social equality.

The Mohali The Mohali (also known as the Mahli) belong to the larger Munda-Santal cluster of people groups in northeast India. While all these groups descend from tribal backgrounds, industrialization and development projects have changed their culture and led to new jobs. Most Munda-Santal tribes still survive on agriculture, but many men and women have started finding other sources of income. Some Mohali are known for selling bamboo baskets at markets. Although most Munda-Santals follow Hinduism or ethnic religions, in ancient times they worshiped one supreme God before falling into sorcery and idolatry. When Munda-Santals hear the gospel, they are often quick to respond with acceptance.
